My rating: 3 of 5 stars
I love the cover and the art! That is what drew me in. Plus, this book seems somewhat popular.
That being said, I don't know if I recall reading the description of this story, so I didn't know what I was getting myself into when I opened this book. My husband has Cystic Fibrosis and some of the subject material kind of hit close to home. Cystic Fibrosis is different for each individual with the disease. Depending on the severity and mutation of the disease, some people may not even make it to adulthood. As the author explained through her characters, Cystic Fibrosis is degenerative. This explains why Maya ends up with oxygen and will likely need it for the rest of her life.
I think the idea of Dia de los Muertos is beautiful. What a thing to remember those loved ones who are no longer with you! I think it can be healing to remember the good times and share memories with loved ones. Dia de los Muertos played a role in this story because Maya is a bit curious about death and what happens when she dies. The main character, Cat, is a bit afraid of death. She fears losing her sister and is afraid to meet the ghosts in the story, while Maya is excited to meet the ghosts.
Ghosts are portrayed in a positive light in this book and death isn't viewed as scary because there is an afterlife. Not everyone believes this of course. Even so, they may have different ideas about what an afterlife looks like.
