Programming at the Library
Preschool Storytime
I've been involved with preschool storytime since I began working at the library. I've really enjoyed putting together storytimes for a the kiddos that come to our library. I usually create a theme and do a few songs, two books, a craft, and maybe some other random activity like a flannelboard or hide and seek activities.
It's been fun!
Playgroup
This is a well-attended program that I've had going for about a year now. I love the level of parent-child interaction in this program. The parents are very interested in teaching their child social skills and building their vocabulary. I also love that the library has been able to build community for these parents that likely need adult interaction.
Amigos y Libros
This has been a fun bilingual storytime that I work with one of my Spanish speaking co-workers in implementing. I love this program, but attendance is kind of hit and miss and I have plans to target market this program.
Spanish Club
Spanish Club mostly involves games played in Spanish to help develop beginning Spanish vocabulary. Here are some of the things we do:
- We play Zingo, Spot it!, Bingo, Scrabble, and some other games
- We bring out animal and vehicle toys and describe the toys in Spanish
- We take out jump ropes to practice jump rope rhymes in Spanish
Great Reads
Great Reads has been a rewarding school age book club to host. I love getting together with the same small group of parents and kiddos. It's nice to catch up with the kiddos and have fun discussions and book related crafts. I love it!
Stretches and Stories
I experimented with a sort of yoga storytime over the summer, but it totally flopped. I promoted the program with flyers, on the digital sign, on Facebook, and on the calendar. I wonder if promoting the program at the rec center might of helped or even changing the time, but basically no one showed up.
System Wide Programs
I love participating in fun system wide programs. I've participated in Roald Dahl Day, Kids Fiesta, and the Summer Reading Kick-Off, and an anime program. It's fun to see the energy the children and families have for these programs.
Anyhow, it's been a fun first year as a librarian and I'm loving it! :)
