Kindergarten: Letter Recognition

As a reading aide I am testing many elementary school students to see where they are at with reading at the beginning of the year. I just want to say how sad I think it is that so many of the kindergarten children don't know any letters in their alphabet.

If a child is starting kindergarten they should at least recognize the letters in their name before they start school.

Also, according to this DIBELS chart, children should know at least eight letters in the alphabet as they go into kindergarten.

If you are a parent of a preschool-age child, please teach them to at least recognize the letters in their name. Not only are you helping the teachers out, you are also helping your child.

My two cents,
Amanda
