Review: 'Dear Mr. Henshaw' by Beverly Cleary

"Dear Mr. Henshaw" was a Newbery Medal winner in 1984. I really didn't realize how old this book was (I bought it for fifty cents at a thrift store). I read it and enjoyed it, but I kind of wanted something more.

I did want to see what happened in the book as I read it. The character does grow, so that is something really important to me.

The main character is a child of divorce. He needs someone to talk to as his father is a trucker and never comes to visit him. His mother works and takes college courses. So Leigh writes to his favorite author and this author writes back. Because the author is busy, he encourages Leigh to start keeping a journal. Leigh feels a lot better as he keeps a journal. We get to know Leigh. He is always getting things from his lunch stolen and he doesn't have any friends that invite him places. Unfortunately he never does find out who steals his lunch, but there are good things that happen.

I wanted more from the story. However, like real life sometimes certain things aren't resolved. Also like real life, things don't always happen the way we want them too.

I give this book a 3.8 out of five.
